Namghosa (Assamese)

Namghosa, composed by the 16th-century saint-poet Madhabdev, is one of the most revered scriptures of the Vaishnavite movement in Assam. Known as the “Book of Prayer,” it embodies the essence of devotion, humility, and complete surrender to Lord Krishna. For centuries, Namghosa has been a spiritual guide for the Assamese people, nurturing faith and strengthening the Bhakti movement initiated by Srimanta Sankardev.

In a historic and innovative tribute, Dr. Uttam Das recreated Namghosa in his celebrated invention—the Mirror Language. Mirror Language is an extraordinary style of writing where text is inscribed in reverse and becomes legible only when placed before a mirror. This artistic and intellectual creation, recognized by the Limca Book of Records and many global institutions, has established Dr. Das as a pioneer in the field of literary innovation.

Publishing Namghosa (Assamese) in Mirror Language carries deep cultural and spiritual significance. It highlights the richness of Assamese devotional literature while also projecting it onto a global stage through an entirely new medium. By presenting Namghosa in this mirrored script, Dr. Das not only honored Madhabdev’s immortal verses but also emphasized the universality of devotion—showing that faith transcends script, language, and form.

This version of Namghosa was officially released on May 30, 2023, by Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the 15th biannual central session of the All Assam Bengali Youth-Student Federation at Silapathar. The event marked a proud moment for Assam, as one of its greatest spiritual texts was presented in a unique, globally recognized art form.

Through this creation, Dr. Uttam Das reaffirmed his mission: to use Mirror Language as a bridge between tradition and innovation, preserving spiritual heritage while inspiring future generations with a new perspective on literature and faith.
